NEW “LOST BOY” REMIX: The Herbaliser feat Hannah Clive airs on BBC6 Music

UK Hip-Hop/Funk/Soul pioneers The Herbaliser return with ‘There Were Seven – Remixes’ including Lost Boy feat Hannah Clive, recently aired on BBC Radio 6 by DJ Huey (Fun Lovin’ Criminals)

18 months on from the release of their critically acclaimed 7th album, ‘There Were Seven’, UK Hip-Hop/Funk/Soul pioneers The Herbaliser return with ‘There Were Seven – Remixes’. Released on the band’s own Department H label the album features 15 newly recorded and remixed versions, plus a further 8 bonus instrumental cuts, from the likes of 2econd Class Citizen, Wah Wah 45’s Colman Brothers and Drum’n’Bass/Electronica pioneer T Power. Not forgetting of course a remix of BBC Radio 6 “The Lost Boy”, featuring Hannah Clive,  remix courtesy of the brilliant Gigabeatz Bonson.

The band’s first album after a break of four years, ‘There Were Seven’ was hailed as ‘a buoyant return’ (Clash), resembling ’something Grandmaster Flash would produce for a modern day audience’ (The Music Fix) where ‘repeated listens of this finely realised album are therefore an enjoyable must’ (BBC Music) and saw them featured everywhere from The Guardian to DJ Mag.

#HCHQ: Hannah wins competition to perform #InsideLlewynDavis Gig at #Curzon Soho

Artists Crie Da Coeur at The Curzon to Support Art & British Culture

Having entered and won a competition to perform at The Curzon Cinema Soho: Gaslight Cafe: in Shaftesbury Avenue last night, as part of their exclusive celebration of the release of the new Coen Bros Movie: Inside Llewyn Davis, I can report that it was a genuine pleasure to perform. Apparently there had been over 150 entries so I was completely chuffed to have won a slot. We were made to feel most welcome by organisers and staff. The idea behind the gig was that the Curzon transformed their cafe into a sixties bar a la Gaslight Cafe, Greenwich Village, New York, from the legendary folk era of the 60′s, which of course saw the likes of artists such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell & Llewyn Davis emerge.

Surrounded by pictures of these greats and following in the footsteps of songwriters of that groundbreaking era – the protest songs and contemporary social upheavals namely #Vietnam, #Cold War and the #Civil Rights Movement, I was pleased to be able give my own 21st Century post-digital generation call-to-arms, appealing to audiences to support what is their own culture, to support art and most especially to #SupportArtists – to buy their music/art – because of course we put our heart and souls into it, to give it to them, as part of their culture. Flashing my own V for Victory #McCartney hand sign I asked them to: “Help Art Survive“. To my utter joy the whole bar area first fell quickly silent to listen, then erupted into a massive spontaneous round of applause. So thank you – this artist is very touched. The following is a link to a video art piece I created regarding the need to #Support Art and artists. Please share. Your Culture Vs Free Art: Click here.

Thank you Curzon for the opportunity and most importantly: TO MY FELLOW ARTISTS perhaps this could be a new mantra for the Post Digital New Wave of Indie Artists? Flash the V for victory sign saying: “Support Artists, Support Art, Buy Our Music”….because audiences like this 😉

Finally, I must add that after a decade following our own creative paths, my former (brilliant) songwriting partner Richard Erskine was able to join me on stage for a rendition of our song Red Sand. With absolutely no rehearsal, less than twelve hours notice, it made not a bit of difference and the years simply fell away.  The smile on my face was as wide as a Boeing 747 and to see so many friendly faces out to support – some having come from as far as Brighton to see us – was just wonderful. A very big thank you to all of you. To be the second generation of Clive’s playing Shaftesbury Avenue on a Saturday night was just great. Reckon my Dad (the actor John Clive) would have been absolutely chuffed for me – I am sure I could feel him there with me. #SupportArtists

#HCHQ #GRAMMYS 2014 Comment

#HCHQ Grammys 2014 Comment: Ok was it just me or were the #GRAMMYs boring/OTT and Her Madgeness out of tune? THAT was embarrassing (although not unsurprising) second only to Steve Tyler’s appalling rendition of Smokey’s tune. Smokey Robinson himself struggled to contain his mirth.

I did enjoy Macklemore & Lewis: their anti-homophobia anthem ‘Same Love’. But the rest just too stereotypically OTT USA stylee for me.

I note that “…Myley Cyrus had the good sense to skip the three and a half hour snooze-fest that was Sunday’s ceremony in favor of playing Guitar Hero. Anyone who watched last night’s awards knows who made the right choice…”(Huffington Post, Jan 28, 2014)  So it wasn’t just me then!

I also note that Her Coolness and most exciting &  provocative female icon since Madonna (Lady Gaga) also had the good sense to avoid. Rihanna was another notable non-attendee. Although I doubt they were all round Miley’s playin’ Guitar Hero, mind you that is a vaguely rock n roll scene to picture in one’s head.

I’m not engaging in the who was the best/worst dressed on red carpet shit because well… its shit and shallow and in the words of Caitlin Moran “I am a strident feminist!”

Lastly, why DID they have to wait until half the Beatles were no more before they gave them a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award? I reckon if John were here, he’d of done a Miley and run (a Mile-y) probably round to the Mother Monster’s herself … now imagine a duet with them two 😉 that would be cool!

#HCHQ Recommends! Review: Happy Days for Richmond Upon Thames Peter Pan Production starring Henry Winkler

HCHQ Theatre Review: Happy Days… Peter Pan Panto starring Henry Winkler in Richmond-Upon-Thames, UK.

Last night I had the absolute pleasure of climbing aboard the good ship Panto with Richmond Theatre’s 2013 Christmas Pantomime production of Peter Pan, starring no less than The Fonz himself – Mr Henry Winkler – playing the irascible Captain Hook – still possessing that Fonz-glint-to-his-eye.

Together with my eight-year-old and my own Mum we took a delightful and very funny trip down memory lane, three generations disappearing into the mists of Neverland and what is the uniquely British experience of Christmas Pantomime.

I can unequivocally state that this year’s production is just utterly brilliant and I haven’t laughed so much in years.

Winkler’s Hook (no pun intended) was certainly enough to engender plenty of “He’s behind you’s!” with much boo-ing and hissing from the audience, which as the evil Captain Hook, Winkler really worked up. This American star really did get it – the British humour of it – he was very funny and got what panto’s meant to be about. Entertaining in all the right ways, this pantomime was everything that a good panto’ should be. And I say this with a small degree of authority since I have had to sit through a fair few of these, these past years at Richmond, not to mention those of my own childhood at Richmond Theatre. So you see, its somewhat of a Clive family tradition our annual panto trip, Richmond theatre holds a special place in our hearts (my Dad starred at Richmond the night Man first landed on the Moon for example!) so, I am relieved to say that this year – Richmond finally got it right.

As a songwriter myself, I am pleased to relate that evidently someone was wise enough to actually bother with a decent music budget this year so the score includes a number of very well known, indeed top drawer sing-along classics and of every era – from Guns n Roses “Sweet Child of Mine” to Madness’s “Our House”; from Tina Turner to the London traditional “Lambeth walk” plus contemporary chart songs. The costumes were fabulous, as were the sets. Last but certainly not least – every single one of the cast was superb (including the child actors: yes really!) – and no star turns carrying weaker ‘celebrity’ others here, as has sadly been the case previously.

From its indisputable star Henry Winkler, through pirates, lost boys and Indians, right down to the diminutive and hilarious Tinkerbell – all of them ‘worked it’ and just as they should. All classic pantomime gag boxes ticked here (including a few I had forgotten) and some hysterical modern twists too: “Yes their Indian tom toms keep me awake at night” – pirate holds up tom tom sat nav: “At the next junction…turn right”. Lots of actual flying, flames, funny modern references like the “Strictly” gag…(no spoilers here). Yep I can say hand on heart that indeed the writers have got it right this year, as have the rest of the production team. Well done Richmond! HCHQ heartily recommends: Oh and ladies…Da Fonz still got it going on baby!!
